Have Your Say

Let us know your thoughts about the festival

Who do you tip to make it big this year?

Corinne Bailey Rae

South By Southwest has a long and distinguished list of artists that have gone on to take the music world by storm. Who do you tip for the top out of this year's batch of wannabe superstars?

Read comments below.

Peter de Meteor, BRISTOL
I can't believe that Piney Gir isn't receiving more critical acclaim.

Ian, London
Love of Diagrams from Melbourne, Australia. Saw them in London late last year, and it's great to see Steve Lamacq picking up on them as one of his highlights at SXSW

Red Rose
I'm agreeing with munchkin... The research are just amazing. I personally think they will get a bit bigger this and then a bit bigger the year after etc etc etc. I love them x

Robert, Glasgow
If The Fratellis' other records are as good as 'creeping up the backstairs' then they could have similar success to the Arctic Monkeys, but I really hope The Rakes do well this year cause their gee-tar sounds fantastic and they are so much fun live.

Jane - Teddington
During the live broadcast from SXSW last Thursday, Stuart Maconie said that Newton Faulkner's first release, Full Fat was on the Radio 2 playlist, but I can't see it. Is it not released yet? Hope it's soon, 'cos I love his stuff and all my friends too!

Mickey
For Tomorrows, a Manc three piece, were invited to play SXSW but coudnt due to other commitments. But you can listen to them live on BBG GMR online Tonight mon 20th march. Check them out they were tipped as ones to watch in 2006 by CDUK. They are electic. www.fortomorrows.co.uk

Pat in The Great White North
In thanks for the great tips on UK and US and AU acts, let me spread the word on some great Canadian bands. IMMACULATE MACHINE are a young trio out of Victoria, BC who have a knack for making a three piece sound intricate and beautiful; great sound. THE ORGAN, also from BC have a deeply textured sound at once dark and comforting.

Michele says, 'CHECK OUT - BEX MARSHALL'
Proper Rocker. Bex is a superb lyricist, gifted guitarist, & has a voice like an Angel with a faint smoking habit. FANTASTIC PERFORMER. Make the effort!!!

Marky P
Newton faulkner . genius before he is famous, breathtakig

john, manchester
Thr Fratellis are definitely ones to watch for 2006 in my opinion, debut ep out soon and gigs nationwide according to their website.

dirty pretty things r very very good

george guy wolverhampton
I say there be loads groups make it big from south by southwest is year I promise you such as the new names but it's will take some of them 6 to 12 months to make it main stream becuase there records labels and radio station have the say what get played which is sad really becuase there loads talented people and groups at these places and they have go around playing local gig to get picked up after is becuase no airplay or much publicity becuase radio shows choose what to play and who they like so we see in next 6 to 12 months who was biggest act from here end day luck luck to everyone playing there

James, Barnsley
Bromheads jackets are the best band in the country they sing about real stuff and it feels its just too you. Also milburn are also awesome Sheffields the place too be with little man tate as well writing good tunes

Jeff, Brighton
There are so many but happened to bump band called Scully the other night who blew me away. If you like the Jam / Clash then check them out. Guilemots are also v cool.

Pete, Southampton
Another band that sound brilliant and are producing upbeat rock are Switches, they won Fresh meat on Zane Lowe's show a few weeks ago and were great supporting the Rakes tour in Portsmouth.

Sam, London
The Colour will hopefully do well, playing two gigs, one of the 17th and one on the 18th. Signed up by EMI/Rethink, they have an album out soon. Can't wait ....

chris, blackpool

Marmaduke
DUELS are in Austin, back to support Grahm Coxon, single ANIMAL out 3 4 2006 ALBUM to follow - they are going to be huge. Check out the site duelstheband.com

Deborah, London
Editors and The Zutons

Annie, Reading
Newton Faulkner's Teardrop, live from SXSW was breathtaking! Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck - he's got my vote for sure!

James South Wales
Gomez, they have a new Album out in May called 'How We Operate'. and they will be playing SXSW again. Why have people forgot about Gomez, not even a mention on the Radio last night, and last night would have been a great oppotunity to speak to the Band. Gomez!! atch this space

Stu Robson
DUKE SPECIAL! you gotta check this great guy out! fantastic music- i dont know why he's bigger really.. the live shows are amazing and will stand out to you.. i think he will be big!

Anna, Brum
Anyone going has got to check out Blackbud. They're a hugely talented Wiltshire 3 piece & are destined for great things - they've played a set for Zane so they're on their way already!

Gus
Mogwai

Arwen
It's got to be Newton Faulkner. If Full Fat doesn't become a hit i'll eat my hat! And I like hats... not to eat obviously...

Pammy.U.K.
What about local band BUTTERCUP! I would pick Buttercup with Hilary York.Very smokey voice and good song writer.

Sally Crowley, Bury Lancs
Keep an eye out for a lad called Ben Taylor who is supposed to be doing a collaboration with KT Tunstall & members of Gomez. You might recognise the voice. He's the son of James Taylor & Carly Simon & quite frankly the guy rocks (for want of a better word) Got a Jack Johnson vibe but maybe more edgy & should probably have his sister Sally with him too who is equally talented. Best thing about them both is that they are completely indie & release their music via the net. Check them out you won't be disappointed.

Gemma near Bradford
NEWTON FAULKNER live from SXSW - How good was that guy! Fantastic performance and something almost unique these days - a real musician! Can't wait for the album, which can't come soon enough!

Dillan Moran
Agree with Jack. The Brakes deserve exposure. Why can I never get in to see GOMEZ. Always sold out, send someone with a microphone.

Roy, Liverpool
Check out the Hoopla Loopla, excellent band, great mix of styles.

MJ the original Porthcawl
People in Planes by far the best new band around can't wait for their first album out on 28th march. Check out their web site

Patrick from South London
HUGE Newton Faulkner fan, but one thing worries me, apart from the vote, he's not mentioned anywhere on the site...no picture...nothing! Does he really exist, or is it a vocalist, two guitarists and some hand percussion, as I suspected when I heard him play live (and alegedly solo)on Dermot! Is it not time to reveal him?

Neil
There's a great number of cool Brit acts about at the moment, but if we're picking one, it has to be Newton Faulkner. Has great songs, does amazing things with a guitar and also sports a fantastic hairdo...

Ross, Edinburgh
It'll have to be the Kooks, how many good songs can they make!!

pol x of st kilda
Coach Said Not To, first heard on the mpfree on 6music and loved them. They played the Hideout Theater last night. I hope it went well. Really brilliant music. I was given a Wolfmother CD as part of a care parcel from Melbourne but have yet to listen to it as the YES style cover has brought out the anti-prog bigot within.

James, Brighton
I'd love to see Secret Machines springboard this year. Their new album is pretty special. Look out for a band called Good Shoes too.

Dave Smith, Dundee.
Check the Hazey Janes - excellent young band with an eclectic sound.

Dave Hastings - London.
Caught The Len Price 3 earlier this year in a riot at the Dublin Castle, Camden...not seen a combo like this for years. Fresh, freaky and very English rock 'n' roll. Think they could surprise a few people across the pond...

Joe, London
David Ford. He'll blow your sock off.

Daz
Superstar, you say? Talented also! AND with some of the most awesome hair on his head and his chin! Can there be such a man? Are the legends true – was there someone made from God’s very own musical manuscript and actually given life?? Yes, my friends, and that man is Newton Faulkner. He walks among us like any other man, but truly he will save us all…

KARLY, London
PETS FOR PILOTS are gonna shock people with their album this year - it's dazzling and original.

The Len Price 3
The Len Price 3 have been a revelation to those lucky enough to catch them live in the UK over the last year or so. A pure rock 'n' roll combo from the Medway delta they have a unique English sound that will be lapped up thirstily by parched Texans....Derm'

miss b
POLYTECHNIC....are going to be AWESOME...if you heard them playing at Maida Vale for Steve Lemaq you will agree.... they're amazing live and touring the uk in april... they play at Exodus on sat 18th @ 8pm with Nine Black Alps another great Manchester band...go see them...

FoxDhoj
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Brakes, Beck and Guillemots will bring some interesting alternative to this year's line-up!

Ben Keeler
I'm guessing Wolfmother will get bigger in the US and UK thanks to SxSW (as well as other Aussie bands like The Grates, Morning After Girls, and The Presets). As for lovely British bands, I'd say...The Go! Team, Guillemots, Forward Russia, Envelopes, Duels, The Zutons, Field Music, Mystery Jets, Boy Kill Boy, Editors, The Feeling and more will push up hopefully...

ellie
support the uk bands and check ot the mutts. they rock!!!

Danielle
I reckon Harrisons are going to get many new fans after this festival. Another ace Sheffield band-they're tipped to be big this year. They're on steve lamaq tonight (i think), so get listening!

MJ (also not that one)
Martha Wainwright is a STAR, I tell you!

Lance
The Detroit trio, The Hard Lessons are worth a listen. An amazing live performance.

Loopy, Leeds
Without a doubt CORINNE BAILEY RAE - her voice will melt their hearts.

Karl - Birmingham
I must join the growing ranks of Newton Faulkner fans - anyone who can play, sing and write songs like that deserves enormous success!

Kylos
OPPENHEIMER!!! CHECK THEM OUT GUYS! FROM BELFAST, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BAND.

Micheal Jackson....No not that one!
The Charlatans!!! By Far the Best band at the festival and radio 1 never mentions them!!!

Paul (Glasto)
Newton Faulkner, without a shadow of a doubt. Fantastic emerging talent.

Gavin and his Guitar
I've been lucky enough to see Newton Faulkner a number of times over the last couple of years ... completely astounding! If there is any justice in this world then we'll all wake up one morning and he'll be top of the tree !!

S&S
Mohair will make it massive this year, go check them out and scream for end of the line!

G
Mohair will make it massive this year, go check them out and scream for end of the line!

Janine,Scotland
Newton Faulkner is Amazing!!! Love This guy!! xx

Jo Diamond
Without doubt 'Paris Motel' - the best London band I have heard in a long time - beautiful and intelligent lyrics delivered by the multi talented Amy May, her band and, an ever changing lineup made up of classically trained musicians.

Dianne, Liverpool
Look out for The Aeroplanes on Friday 17th March 1am. Played on the Janice Long show in December. They played a really good set. Looking forward to hopefully hearing them again on Radio 2

Alex, Suffolk
Bang Bang Bang and Autovaughn are playing at The Chuggin Money on Thursday from 5pm - good place to get the drinking started I reckon. Amazing bands.

Gordon
Guillemots - or are they too musical?

Pete, Durham
It gotta be Art Brut for me!!!!!! Their live shows are not to be missed from what i've seen so far

Liz
To Americans there really isn't any doubt that the Black Angels are the most significant band playing SXSW, but I firmly predict the UK industry will miss the train... I was listening with fascination to the pundits on Round Table earlier today & their comments on Fields made it obvious that they don't get what's going on over here. Rule #1 in America is that psychedelia never really goes out of style; it just waxes and wanes depending on who's doing what with it. The Black Angels are doing something interesting. So yes, if you want to know what America is really listening to (as opposed to what's on the CMJ charts), this is, beyond a doubt, the band to see. You've got 2 options: 14th at the Engine Room with The High Dials (also recommended) and, better yet, the 18th at the (free!) North Loop Block Party, which includes both the above plus BJM and others.

Katrina, Glasgow
People should definitely go and see some of the breakthrough Australian bands playing at SXSW, the Modular party at Eternal on Wednesday night is the place to be to see Wolfmother and The Presets! You will *definitely* hear about these bands in the future!

Geoff, Minehead, UK.
Check Hilary York at OSLO Thurs 16th and Rhe Ginger Man on Sat 18th. New album THE MOON worth a second listen.

munchkin
look out for 'The Research' playing at The Parish II on 15th hope Americans faal in love with them.

Richard, London
Newton Faulkner - saw him play at Ronnie Scotts fairly recently. He was AMAZING. I have never seen an act like him. I am looking forward to hearing much more from him.

Geoff, Minehead U K
Check out Hilary York with the CHOCULATY HUSKY voice and song writing nack.

Jez from Manchester
NEWTON FAULKNER - once you've seen him live, you are hooked! The dude is awesome!

Chris, London
Haing heard Newton Faulkner play live on Johnnie Walker last year and recently on Dermot O'Leary, I think he's going to be huge!

Jack
None of the above..... this year's band is BRAKES

Marjorie Cryshtal
Jana Hunter is sweet honey milk and bones.

Bruce Fyfe, Glasgow
I'm expecting KT Tunstall to do well as with Corinne Bailey Rae. Would love to see Field Music get more attention. Top of my list is Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders (as The Foo Fighter's drummer goes solo).

mike fitzgerald in amsterdam
Suggest listen out for a band from Austin called the Black Angels. And Fort Lauderdale who ought to be there really .

Steve
a bit of UK/international recognition for Glen Phillips wouldn't go amiss. he gets better with every album since going solo when Toad the Wet Sprocket (the US act) split at the end of the 90s.

Sarah, Minneapolis
Atmosphere! Or anything Rhymesayers! Check out Rhymesayers stage this year at SXSW.

Fiona Mulrooney
Corrine Bailey Rae will be huge! But I'd really like to see Your Vegas up there as a new act contender this year- they're fantastic live!

Phil
if you're going make sure you check out Tina Dico (18th Floor at Capital Palace) on Thursday. Up and coming star. Had record of week on R2 recently. Pure simple brilliance. She will blow you away. Also recommend The Ark (Sweden) - Dirty Dog Bar; quite underhyped... great band. Next big thing to come out of Sweden??

Megan, London
There are a few emerging bands I am making a b-line for including The Feeling, Boy Kill Boy, Newton Faulkner, The Go! Team, Jim Noir, The Rifles and Mohair and a few more established artists like Belle and Sebastian and Echo and the Bunneymen.
