Thetford Forest is the biggest lowland forest in England with more than 19,000 hectares of woodland, an area about the size of Nottingham.

One of Britain's newer woodlands, Thetford was created by the Forestry Commission in 1922 as a commercial forest.

Activities: Bird watching. The Mayday Pond is a good place for watching a huge variety woodland birds. If there aren't many birds here, it could be because it's been raining. Then look out for puddles and a small number of ponds in the woods.

Way marked tracks such as the Woodlark trail. Hides.

Deer viewing. Walking, cycling, horse riding.

Visitor centre at High Lodge.

Cycling: two six mile family trails, an intermediate red route or the black route (suitable for more experienced riders).

Sculpture Trail.

GO APE! aerial assault course of extreme rope swings for the whole family - 0870 458 9187.

Also Rishbeth Wood - a mix of Pine, Oak, Beech and Larch. Red woodland walk (3.5 miles) including Thetford Warren Lodge.

Mayday Bird Hide - for Goshawks.

Thorpe Woodlands - attractive walks along river bank.

Wildlife watching:

There is a small hide at the end of the orange walk from the High Lodge Forest Centre which offers visitors opportunities to glimpse deer.

There is a bat hibernaculum adjacent to the High Lodge Forest Centre.

Guided and self guided walks plus educational activities.

Essential kit:Binoculars and telescopes. Walking shoes.

Snacks and drinks at the visitor centre.

Access:

Some wheelchair access but check details with ranger before leaving home.

Disabled parking and disabled toilets available at High Lodge Forest Centre.

Lynford Arboretum and Lakes - take the A134 towards the village of Mundford. Footpaths are suitable for wheelchair users.

Getting there:

Located on the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk in Breckland, East Anglia. Travel from the M11 from London, the A11 from Norwich/Newmarket and the A14 from Cambridge/Ipswich.

Enter the forest drive from the B1107 Thetford to Brandon Road. Take the forest road for about 1陆 miles to arrive at the High Lodge car parking area.

Opening times:Daily 9am-5pm.
Charges:

Free entry.

Charge for the forest drive - a forest toll applies - 拢5 per car, 拢2 per motorbike, 拢10 per minibus, 拢20 per coach and 拢30 annual season ticket.
