Thousands of children will be targeted in a safety campaign after a teenager was murdered by a man she met online.

Ashleigh Hall, 17, of Darlington, was raped and murdered last October by Peter Chapman, who she met on a social networking site.

The Darlington Council campaign offers specialist security software to the borough's 14,000 teenagers.

The e-safe software will notify schools of inappropriate activity.

John Steel, lead improvement officer for children's services for the council, said: "The e-safe education monitoring managed service, ensures that all our students are properly safeguarded, whenever they use a computer, both in school and at home."

Convicted sex offender Peter Chapman was jailed for the rape and murder of the Darlington College student in March.
