Two teenaged school pupils who became unwell after reportedly vaping were taken to hospital for treatment.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it sent ambulances to Excelsior Academy in Newcastle at 13:00 BST on Monday.

James Andriot, the school's principal, said like many schools it was managing a growing number of young people who have "developed a dependency on vapes".

Northumbria Police is carrying out enquiries after being alerted by the ambulance crews.

Mr Andriot said: "We have a robust behaviour policy in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of all pupils and our position regarding vapes and other banned substances is very clear."

He added the school was continuing to raise awareness of the dangers of vaping and is supporting students and their families as appropriate.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: 鈥淭he pair were taken to hospital to be checked over and have since been discharged.

鈥淚t is believed they became unwell after using a vape.鈥
