Armed police were sent to Byker to hunt for the attacker

A man has been shot and injured in a gun attack.

Firearms officers were among those sent to the scene of the shooting in the Headlam Green area of Byker, Newcastle, just before 14:00 BST on Wednesday.

The victim, who is aged in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment, but police said his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody for questioning.
