The incident happened outside Morrisons in St James鈥 Street, Brighton, at 19:15 BST on 5 June.
The boy was leaving the store with his family when he was pushed over by a man, causing him to fall backwards, police said.
The man was described as in his 20s, of a large build and with a brown beard.
He wore a blue woollen hat, a light blue or grey shirt, dark blue scarf, blue lanyard and dark trousers, police added.
