Five teenage boys are seriously ill in hospital after a car hit a tree in East Kilbride.

Police said the incident happened near the junction between Crookedshields Highway and Crookedshields Road, at about 20:55 on Sunday.

A 15-year-old was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, while another passenger, aged 16, was admitted to the city's Royal Infirmary.

The driver of the car and a passenger, both 18, and another 17-year-old passenger are being treated at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said it appeared the driver had lost control of the vehicle before it struck the tree.

An investigation is under way.

Officers appealed for information and asked anyone who saw the incident or may have captured it on a dashcam to .
