Two people are in hospital in a serious condition after two cars collided, with the occupants of one car fleeing the scene, police say.

Officers were called to reports of the crash between a black Mercedes and a grey Audi A1 on Leigh Avenue in Widnes on Friday at 23:50 BST, Cheshire Police said.

The occupants of the Mercedes had fled the scene on foot, the force said, while a man and a woman in the Audi were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 25-year-old man, from Widnes, has since been arrested and is being held in custody. The force has appealed for anyone with footage to contact them.
