A moped rider has suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing off the road between Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside, police said.

The woman's white and green Peugeot moped crashed on the A170 at Nawton, at the junction of Guncroft Lane, at about 10:00 GMT on Sunday. No other vehicles were involved.

The road was closed for several hours while police examined the scene. The woman remains in hospital, officers said.

North Yorkshire Police has appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to get in touch.
