Two sheep were attacked by a dog in North Yorkshire, leaving one dead and one seriously injured, police have said.

The sheep were part of a small flock which were attacked overnight in Lower Dunsforth, Aldborough, last Sunday.

Officers said people should remember it is a criminal offence to allow a dog to worry sheep, and even if the sheep was not caught it could be seriously harmed.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police.

A police spokesman said: "If you live in or near a farming area, you must make sure your dog cannot escape from your property, as it may find its way onto land containing sheep.

"It is vital you keep your dog on the lead around sheep, even if you can usually trust it to come to call."
