Work to improve two of Manchester city centre's major roads will begin next week.

From Monday, Deansgate and Whitworth Street West will see the start of a range of changes in the hope of encouraging more people to walk or cycle.

The city council project will feature the addition of segregated cycleways and improved controlled pedestrian crossings.

Work is expected to continue until the spring of 2025.

'Great strides'

From Tuesday evening until Friday morning, night time road closures will be in place between Quay Street and Liverpool Road to allow for resurfacing works.

A permanent one-way system will also be put in place for southbound traffic between Quay Street and Liverpool Road.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, executive member for environment and transport, said: "Walking, wheeling and cycling have become key pillars in our overall transport strategy and through schemes like this one in Deansgate, we aim to embed that ethos even more across our city centre.

“In other places throughout Manchester we’ve already seen the benefits of improving infrastructure in this way and I am confident we will see that replicated on Deansgate in the coming months."
