A woman was raped by an unknown man on a town footbridge, police have said.

The victim, who is in her 20s, told detectives she was approached and attacked after walking from Banning Street in Romsey, Hampshire, towards the A3090 bypass early on Sunday morning.

Police said the incident happened some time between 01:00 and 08:00 BST.

Det Insp Claire Shawley said: “Officers are carrying out extensive enquiries to ascertain the exact circumstances and narrow down the timescale."

She said neighbourhood officers would be carrying out increased patrols in the area.

Police have appealed for witnesses and anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage to contact them.
