A man who stabbed a person in the chest outside a nightclub has been jailed.

Liam Amadi, 22, of Choat Place, Chelmsford, knifed a 23-year-old man outside Popworld, in the town, on Sunday 24 March.

Essex Police said he had been removed from the club following a fight inside the venue at about 03:30 GMT.

He was initially charged with attempted murder, but the court accepted his two guilty pleas to causing grievous bodily harm and possessing a blade. He was sentenced to eight years and three months behind bars.

Police said Amadi argued with the group outside the club before stabbing the victim in the chest which caused "a life-threatening injury".

Two of the security staff were trainee paramedics and cared for the victim at the scene.

Amadi ran away, but was seen by officers in the town centre, who stopped and searched him before they arrested him.

After he was handed his sentence at Chelmsford Crown Court, Det Louise Pendrigh said: "This was a senseless act of violence that left a young man fighting for his life.

"The judge in this case was right to praise the incredible work of the two trainee paramedics 鈥 without them the victim of this attack may not have survived."
