A shop in Devon has been left badly damaged after firefighters tackled a blaze for about four hours, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has said.

The alarm was raised after smoke was seen coming from a Spar on Old Laira Road in Plymouth at 12:20 GMT on Wednesday morning.

Crews from six fire stations in Devon and one in Cornwall attended and used jets, thermal imaging cameras and positive pressure ventilation fans to put the blaze out.

Firefighters said the fire, which was believed to have started accidentally, began in the basement of the building, which was 50% damaged by fire and 100% damaged by smoke and heat.
