A town's swimming aspirations have edged closer after support was pledged for an 拢11m scheme to build a new pool.

North Norfolk District Council members praised the scheme centred on Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre.

The 25m swimming pool and a multi-use games area would be built at Trap Lane Recreation Ground, next to the current site.

"This will bring incredible benefits to the town and surrounding area," Conservative councillor Liz Vickers said.

鈥淔akenham has been without swimming facilities for a decade now.

"Knocking on people鈥檚 doors and meeting with residents showed there was a huge desire for a new pool.鈥

The scheme was made possible thanks to 拢9.9m from the government's levelling up fund, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

It also benefitted from Section 106 payments and from the Football Foundation.

Councillors voted unanimously to proceed with the project, allowing consultation work to begin.

It was estimated the swimming pool and 3G pitch would be delivered by March 2026.
