Man in court after detective stabbed in prison

A man charged with stabbing a detective inside a maximum security prison has appeared in court.
David Taylor is accused of the attempted murder of a Greater Manchester Police officer during an interview at HMP Frankland, County Durham.
The 62-year-old appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court via videolink for five minutes and was not asked to enter a plea.
Magistrates were told the allegation was so serious the case must be sent to crown court.
Mr Taylor, formerly of Willington, County Durham, was not legally represented at the hearing.
He told the court he would apply for bail at a later date.
Magistrates remanded him in custody ahead of his appearance at Teesside Crown Court on 1 October.
The force previously said the injured officer had been discharged from hospital and was recovering at home.
