A 29-year-old man has died after collapsing during the Great North Run.

The runner died in hospital on Sunday after falling ill on the route which runs from Newcastle to South Shields.

His cause of death is not yet known and no further details will be released in respect of the wishes of the man's family, The Great Run Company said.

"The whole organisational team at the Great North Run express their sincerest condolences to his family and friends," a spokesperson added.

About 60,000 runners signed up to take part in the 13.1-mile (21km) event on Sunday in wet and cool conditions.
