A 23-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering serious head injuries in an assault in Sheffield, police have said.

Officers were called by the ambulance service to reports of a serious assault on Staniforth Road in Darnall at about 16:30 BST on Saturday.

The road was closed for a time for officers to carry out investigations, but it had since been reopened, a force spokesperson said.

An investigation was under way and officers were carrying out "extensive inquiries" to establish the circumstances of the incident, they added.

Neighbourhood officers were also conducting extra patrols in the area to support the local community.

Anyone with relevant information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around that time, was asked to contact the South Yorkshire force.
