Jonathan Brash resigned as a councillor to stand as an MP

Hartlepool鈥檚 MP has been named the chair of a panel which aims to reduce crime and create a safer community.

It is a break with tradition as the Safer Hartlepool Partnership usually consists of representatives from the council, police, fire brigade and health groups.

Labour鈥檚 Jonathan Brash had previously held the post of chair when he was a councillor, but resigned in June to stand as an MP.

However, members of the panel have now approved a motion allowing him to sit on the body.

Mr Brash told the meeting of the group he wanted to take the position to help address "some of the key challenges we face in Hartlepool", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

He added: "These challenges are huge and they need our attention."
