A man has been arrested over the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy near a park, police have said.

Merseyside Police arrested the 19-year-old in connection with the stabbing which happened on Monday at 22:15 BST near Gaskell Park in St Helens.

The boy was stabbed multiple times by two males who then fled the scene.

The victim, who was hospitalised in a serious but stable condition, continued to recover from his injuries, police said.

The arrested man has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The force said the investigation was continuing and witnesses were encouraged to come forward.
