Dozens of horse riders join charity beach ride

About 40 riders and their horses joined an annual ride across the sands of Morecambe Bay.

Under the guidance of local fisherman Michael Wilson - the 26th King's Guide to the Sands - they rode from the Cumbrian village of Flookburgh and back again.

After King Henry VIII acquired local priories following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century, his obligations included the appointment of guides over the dangerous sands of Morecambe Bay.

Funds raised by Saturday's event will go to the Guide Over Sands Trust, which provides two guides who are still appointed by the monarch.
