A man has appeared court charged with attempted murder.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to an address in the Regent Court area of Gateshead on Tuesday evening.

A man in his 50s was found with serious head injuries "consistent with having been caused by blunt trauma", the force said, and he remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The 42-year-old man from Gateshead appeared before magistrates in South Tyneside earlier and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court in August.

Det Ch Insp Rebecca Fenney, of Northumbria Police, said it was a "serious assault" and those involved were believed to be "known to each other".
