States of Jersey Police is investigating a suspected case of spiking with chewing gum after a man was taken to hospital.

The man said on social media he was given the gum on Friday night by a stranger in Jersey and then became ill.

Officers said it was the first time they had investigated a report like it.

Police said people should not accept drinks or food from strangers on nights out.

The force said: 鈥淚f you are out with friends, stick together and be aware of your surroundings and make sure you have planned your journey home.

鈥淚f you do suspect you may have been given a substance and start to feel strange or ill, then seek help from a friend or a member of staff where you are, and go to hospital.

鈥淩eport the incident to the police, and remember if it is an emergency, then always call 999.鈥
