A pedestrian was seriously injured when he was hit by a car in Birmingham, prompting a police investigation.

The crash happened in Handsworth on Gibson Road at its junction with Hamstead Road at approximately 23:00 BST on Sunday.

The pedestrian, a 32-year-old man, is believed by police to have been crossing at the junction when he was struck by a Ford Focus turning on to Gibson Road.

He suffered significant head injuries and was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Focus, a 63-year-old man, remained at the scene and was supporting officers with their investigation, the West Midlands force added.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from the serious collision investigation unit, said: "While this collision happened late at night, I know there were a number of people and cars in the area of the junction.

"I would appeal for anyone who hasn’t spoken to us to please get in touch. Please do not assume we already know the information you have."

He specifically asked the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa who was on Gibson Road next to the crash scene to get in touch.

"I believe this person has key information that would assist us," he said.

"I would emphasise that this driver is not involved in the collision and is a witness."
