Opera singers will be digging deep in Derbyshire as they stage a sold-out show in a cave.

Part of Buxton International Festival, Opera in the Cavern will be staged in Poole's Cavern from 9 July until 18 July.

Organisers say visitors will also be offered a guided tour of the site.

James Acton, the cave and centre manager at Poole's Cavern, said the event promised to be "really interesting".

"It's the first time we've worked as part of the festival," he said.

"We've had theatre and music in the cave, but this is a very special event for us."

The cave was formed about two million years ago, and Buxton International Festival was first held in 1979.

Marketing manager Harriet Grubb said the debut trip underground would be a new experience for singers and opera fans alike.

"For the singers it's going to be a really unique experience for them, because it's not often you get to sing in a cave, and especially one which has got this geology going on, and the acoustics," she said.

"The atmosphere I think is going to be amazing - the fact that it's kind of dark and drippy, it's going to be fun."
