Second arrest in attempted murder probe

A second person has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident that left a man with serious injuries.

Officers were called to Vange Riverview Centre in Basildon, Essex, shortly before 18:00 BST on 4 May.

They found the victim had suffered a serious head injury and he was taken to hospital, where his condition remains critical.

A 41-year-old man from Basildon, arrested on Tuesday, remains in police custody. A 33-year-old man, also from Basildon, arrested on Thursday, is currently being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Det Ch Insp Louise Metcalfe, from Essex Police, said: "Our investigation into this incident has continued throughout the week as we piece together the circumstances which led to the victim suffering a very serious injury.

"This work led to a significant arrest... and our inquiries are progressing well."
