Extensive works to renovate a woodworm-ravaged museum on the North Yorkshire coast have been approved.

The Grade II listed Filey Museum is beset with dampness and wet rot, as well as a woodworm infestation.

Filey Town Council, which requested planning permission for the restoration, said the 17th Century building was suffering "very badly" with the issues.

However, the town's museum trust claimed it had not been properly consulted about the works.

The work, which has been approved by North Yorkshire Council, will see the indoor paint removed by a specialist company聽allowing聽the wood to be chemically treated.

The dampness and rot聽are set聽to be addressed by improving ventilation and installing new heating systems, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said

Filey Museum Trust said the floor plans were 鈥渧ery聽sketchy with no room dimensions and no specific scale shown鈥.

It added that it had 鈥渘ot聽been fully consulted鈥 and highlighted that while Filey Town Council owned the building聽鈥渋t has never operated the museum鈥.

In response to the feedback, planning officers said that 鈥渟everal conditions are required to ensure satisfactory methods of repair鈥澛燼nd聽that further detailed information had been submitted聽for approval.
