Drivers and rail passengers in parts of Hampshire and Surrey are set to face disruption due to works taking place on the road and on the railway.

On 26 and 27 October, trains on South Western Railway (SWR) are not running between London Waterloo and Portsmouth, via Guildford, due to engineering works taking place.

Roadworks are also scheduled to take place on the A3 southbound on the same two dates between Petersfield and Horndean.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "When planning works, we undertake searches of events in the local area to ensure we aren't causing additional disruption."

They added: "We understand that a rail replacement bus service will also be in operation and expecting the roads to be busy, and as always the advice is check before you travel and plan ahead 鈥 and allow more time for your journey."

SWR said it has updated its journey planners to reflect the longer journey time that the buses will experience.

The diversion route will consist of drivers using the A272, A32, A27 east through before re-joining the A3 up to A3M Junction 2.

The northbound carriageway on the A3 will remain open.

National Highways project manager, Joe Cairns, said: "We understand that the diversion is long but it鈥檚 there for a reason.

"It may be tempting to try a short cut or follow your sat-nav, especially when it鈥檚 indicating a quicker route, but by doing so it can have a real negative impact on local communities 鈥 and your overall journey time may take just as long."
