A murder investigation is under way after the disappearance of an eight-year-old boy in County Louth in the Republic of Ireland.

Kyran Durnin was reported missing from his home in Drogheda in August.

Police began a missing persons inquiry but have been unable to locate Kyran or identify any information on his whereabouts. They believe Kyran is missing presumed dead.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ News is reporting that police believe he may have been killed more than two years ago.

On 30 August, a missing persons report was filed at Drogheda Garda Station.

Gardaí (Irish police) were told Kyran was last seen in the town two days earlier.

They issued a description of the clothes that Kyran was wearing, a picture of him when he was about six years old and an appeal for information.

Tusla, the child and family agency, is working closely with the investigation.

No arrests have been made so far.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone with information to get in touch.
