A 41-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife in Cork.

Garda铆 (Irish police) discovered the body of Deepa Dinamani, 38, in the Wilton area of the city at about 22:10 local time on Friday.

Regin Parithapara Rajan appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Sunday morning.

Det Garda Alan Johnson told the court he arrested Mr Rajan at Togher Garda Station and charged him.

There was no reply to the charge and no application for bail as bail cannot be granted in the district court on a murder charge.

Mr Rajan's solicitor asked for his client to be given any necessary medical attention while in custody.

Judge Olann Kelleher directed that this should happen.

Mr Burke also said his client had no income and applied for legal aid, which was granted by Judge Kelleher.

Mr Rajan was remanded in custody to appear in court again on 20 July.

Ms Dinamani, who is originally from India, was a chartered accountant and had been living at the house in Cardinal Court for several months with her husband and five-year-old child.

On Sunday, more than a hundred members of the Cork Indian community attended a vigil organised by the Pravasi Malayali Association in memory of Ms Dinamani.
