Two people have been injured in a helicopter crash in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.

They were on board the aircraft when it crashed near the bottom of an airfield at St Angelo Airport on Friday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the injuries sustained were minor.

"The matter was passed to the Air Accident Investigation Branch," she added.

The St Angelo Airport was built in 1940 during the Second World War, when it was used as a training base and for storage.

The site was taken over by the local council in the 1960s.

In the 1990s, the council invested in the airport in a bid to operate commercial flights.

A new control tower was built, the runway was resurfaced and new routes were launched to the Channel Islands and Switzerland.

However, this commercial venture proved costly for the council and it shut down the airport in 2002.

Two years later the council leased the St Angelo site to a private company - Enniskillen Airport Ltd.

That firm has been running its operations for the past 20 years.
