A large quantity of prescription medication has been stolen from a pharmacy in Meltham, police said.

Thieves broke into the pharmacy in Huddersfield Road some time between Tuesday and Wednesday evening, West Yorkshire Police said.

Among the drugs stolen were codeine, paracetamol and metformin.

The force warned residents against buying or taking medication not prescribed for them.

Sgt Richard Hamer said: “We are continuing to conduct a number of inquiries into these thefts and would ask anyone who saw suspicious activity outside the pharmacy between 18:00 BST on Tuesday and 21:00 BST on Wednesday to contact us.

“Clearly it can be dangerous to take any medicine which is not prescribed for you, and anyone in the local area who is offered quantities of medicine for sale is urged to contact the police."
