Murder arrest after body pulled from canal

A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man in his 40s was pulled from the Caldon Canal in Staffordshire on Sunday.

Police said they were called shortly before 09:00 GMT on 10 December to the incident near to Deep Hayes Country Park on Sutherland Road, Longsdon, near Leek.

The arrested man, from Dundee, has subsequently been released on bail.

Police said their investigation was ongoing.

Det Ins Nathan Hough from Staffordshire Police said: 鈥淲e have been speaking to people in the area, looking over CCTV and carrying out inquires to find out more.

鈥淲e鈥檙e particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was in the area between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

鈥淲e are keeping an open mind but we think the man was walking next to the canal at some point in this timeframe after he left the Hollybush Inn on Denford Road.鈥
