Street cordoned off after 'man falls down stairs'

Police have cordoned off part of a city centre street after being called to reports of a man "falling down the stairs".

Norfolk Constabulary said officers were called to assist the ambulance service on White Lion Street in Norwich at about 22:20 BST on Friday.

A man, who was described by a witness as being about 70 years old, was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with life-threatening injuries, the force added.

A cordon remains in place around the set of steps leading down to the street.

Ash Stone, who works at a nearby convenience store, said he had gone to the scene after being approached by a woman who had seen the man bleeding heavily.

"I've gone running over to him, I tried speaking to him and I put him in the recovery position," he said.

"We started to lose him, we didn鈥檛 feel a pulse, so I ran over to the Bell [Bell Inn pub] and spoke to security.

"There was an off duty paramedic there who then cut off the clothes and did CPR on him with me. I then ran and got a defib," he added.

Mr Stone believed the man had been drinking at a nearby pub.

Norfolk Constabulary said investigations continued.
