A trial date has been set for a man charged with the murder of a woman found in a North Yorkshire river.

Lisa Welford, 49, was found in the River Derwent in Malton on 24 April. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Vincent Morgan, 47, from Malton, entered no formal plea when he appeared earlier at Leeds Crown Court charged with her murder.

Mr Morgan's barrister indicated he would plead not guilty and Judge Simon Phillips KC set a preliminary trial date of 21 October.

Judge Phillips said the trial would be expected to last for seven days and said Mr Morgan would next appear for a pre-trial hearing on 21 May.

Ms Welford's family have previously described her as a "wonderful daughter, mum, auntie and little sister" and have asked for their privacy to be respected.
