A man has been arrested after a woman was injured in a nightclub in what police described as "an apparent unprovoked attack".

The 28-year-old woman was in the smoking area of Popworld in Solihull at about 02:45 BST on Sunday when a stranger approached her.

After a brief exchange of words, West Midlands Police said he hit the woman and then repeatedly punched her while she was unconscious on the floor, with others pulling him away from her.

A man aged 23 has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

The victim suffered a suspected fractured cheek bone and other injuries in the attack.

Police are appealing for witnesses from anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.
