A vicar from Jersey has set off on a nearly 1,000 mile (1,600km) cycle as part of a charity fundraiser.

Father Nick Barry, the vicar of St Luke's Church, will be cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for St Luke's Restoration Project and the charity War Child.

Father Barry said more than £5,000 has been raised so far.

In a , St Luke's Church said the vicar had begun his challenge on Sunday morning.

Father Barry said the journey was expected to take about 14 days to complete.

"I'm delighted by the response I've received so far in sponsorship," he said.

"We've been planning this for a good number of months. I've been training pretty hard.

"Some days I think I'm ready. and some days I think 'what have I done?'.

"There is a bit of anxiety. It's going to be a monumental challenge, but I'm looking forward to it."
