A man has pleaded guilty to violent disorder following a riot in Darlington.

Ashkan Kareem admitted to his part in the unrest on 5 August, during a hearing at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court.

Durham Police said Kareem, 33, of Grey Street, Bishop Auckland, had been caught on camera throwing a missile towards a group of people during the unrest.

He will be sentenced on Friday at Teesside Crown Court.

A 47-year-old man, who faces the same charge, was refused bail and remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Meanwhile, a man accused of stealing vapes during the riot in Sunderland will face trial in September.

The 34-year-old was charged with violent disorder and one count of burglary during the unrest earlier this month.

At Newcastle Magistrates' Court, the defendant indicated a guilty plea for the burglary charge but did not enter a plea for the violent disorder charge.

He will face trial at Newcastle Crown Court on 10 September.

More than a thousand people have been arrested in connection with violent disorder in parts of England and Northern Ireland that began after three young girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport on 29 July.
