Flats plan for listed former church

A Grade II-listed former Methodist church could be transformed into apartments if plans are approved.
Proposals have been submitted to build 21 apartments at Wesley House, formerly the Church of St John, in Birstall.
The building, off Huddersfield Road and Chapel Lane, had already been converted into offices, but the applicant said there had been "little or no interest" in them.
Medipharm Bradford Ltd said that converting the building into flats instead would help ensure its future.
An earlier plan for the property from a different applicant saw permission granted for several flats, but that never came to fruition, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
There would be no changes to the exterior of the building under the new application, other than additional roof lights and a protrusion through the roof so a new lift could be installed.
The site would also retain its car park with 23 spaces and bin storage.
In a supporting statement, the applicant said the site was within an "existing sustainable location".
"Our proposals are basically to renew the previously approved application and therefore should be supported," they added.
鈥淚n summary, we feel the only viable option to preserve the future of this building is to allow a change of use which will ensure the building鈥檚 long-term survival.
"This, in turn, will preserve the setting of neighbouring Listed Heritage Assets, and on this basis should be supported.鈥
Kirklees Council planners are expected to make a decision on the application before 24 October.
