A large fire has ripped through 200m (650 ft) of a canal embankment, yards from the back gardens of a row of houses.

Three crews of firefighters tackled the blaze on the strip of land next to Carisbrooke Road in Wednesbury, Sandwell.

West Midlands Fire Service issued a warning for people to avoid the area at about 14:00 BST on Sunday.

Drone pictures of the scene showed large areas of scorched land along the side of the Tame Valley Canal.

The service posted on X, formerly Twitter, about an hour later and said the fire had been put out.
