Construction is set to start on a five-storey hospital car park in Derby in September.

The work at Royal Derby Hospital’s Car Park Six comes nearly two years after plans were first approved for an 875-space multi-storey facility by Derby City Council.

During construction, expected to take about 18 months, a temporary park and ride will be set up in Kingsway Boulevard.

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust said the scheme will provide 300 extra spaces overall and help resolve parking and congestion problems on the site.

A hospital trust spokesperson said: “We are really pleased to be progressing our plans to offer improved car parking with more spaces for patients and visitors at Royal Derby Hospital, and will continue to work closely with partners to make sure that the process runs as smoothly as possible.”

The trust initially planned to start construction in the spring.

Work on the scheme had been delayed by a further planning application to amend designs, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service, including lowering the overall height of the structure and removing proposed entrance and exit ramps.

The temporary park-and-ride site, which will have 368 spaces, will be open from 8am until 6pm seven days a week.

A shuttle bus service would be used to transport patients and visitors about one mile to the hospital.
