Omagh hum source traced but not made public
The source of a mystery humming sound which has plagued people living in Omagh may now have been identified 鈥 but is not being made public.
People in the County Tyrone town first started to report a persistent humming that was keeping them them awake in the second half of last year.
A Fermanagh and Omagh District Council investigation has now ended.
John Boyle, the council鈥檚 director of community and wellbeing, said it had been 鈥渃omplex鈥 but had been able to 鈥渉one in on a specific spot鈥.
Mr Boyle said the noise 鈥渨asn鈥檛 audible every night", and was linked to atmospheric conditions, making the investigation very difficult.
鈥淲e were able to hone in on a specific spot, and undertook a targeted screening exercise with a number of industrial businesses using equipment on a 24-hour basis," he said.
鈥淗owever, a particular premises became the focus, and environmental health officers engaged with the management.
鈥淲hile nothing was absolutely concluded, the noise did cease in a sense, but we will keep the complaint open and under review over the next number of months."
He told the council鈥檚 regeneration and community committee the council had received a total of 11 hum complaints.
Back in April, Mr Boyle told the same committee that unless there 鈥渁re formal, public legal proceedings, we would not be naming the source of that noise鈥.
'Would we ever get a good night's sleep again?'
Alan Rodgers, a journalist with the Ulster Herald, said that people in Omagh were 鈥渨aking up in the middle of the night and were hearing this humming sound鈥.
He said that it 鈥渨asn鈥檛 just specific to one particular area of the town鈥 and was 鈥渧ery frustrating鈥 to people who didn鈥檛 know where it was coming from.
Mr Rodgers said that the council began an investigation into the source of the noise, 鈥渂ut initially they couldn鈥檛 find a definitive source for it鈥.
鈥淭his was a very real fear for people鈥 would they ever get a good night鈥檚 sleep again?鈥
He said that the hum 鈥渟eems to have died down鈥 in recent months but added that the council had warned that the sound may return in the autumn.
鈥淭hankfully for now people seem to be getting a good night鈥檚 sleep,鈥 Mr Rodgers said.
Speaking to 大象传媒 News NI on Thursday, one Omagh resident said the hum 鈥渃aused a bit of disturbance but it didn鈥檛 really hurt anybody鈥.
鈥淚t was a bit of gossip, that鈥檚 what it was,鈥 he said.
Another resident said the council should 鈥渙f course鈥 tell people where the noise was coming from.
鈥淲hy would they keep it secret?鈥 she asked.
