A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a "targeted" shooting.
The victim, a man in his 40s, remains in hospital after he was shot in the leg on Boxwood Gardens in St Helens, on Monday, Merseyside Police said.
A 32-year-old man, from St Helens, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and is being held for questioning, the force added.
Det Insp John Mullen appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Police said at about 22:30 BST a group of three men were believed to have targeted the victim and the motive for the attack was currently unknown.
Det Insp John Mullen said: "We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw two men on foot acting suspiciously in the area of Herbert Street and Cecil Street following the shooting."
Anyone with any information including CCTV or doorbell footage is being urged to contact the force.
