Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a derelict Grade II listed building.
Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the old bail house in Middlesbrough Road, South Bank, shortly before 20:00 BST on Thursday.
Three fire engines are at the scene and crews are expected to be there for some time.
The fire service warned the public to avoid the area.
Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "We have two fire engines and an aerial appliance at the incident and we are tackling the fire defensively.
"Crews have done a fantastic job but will be on scene for a few more hours."
