A "significant spillage" closed part of the A38 in Devon on Thursday.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were notified at about 07:00 BST to reports of oil on the road at Harcombe Bends on the A38 Chudleigh.

National Highways said at about 15:45 BST the A38 westbound between the A380 at Splatford Split and the B3344 at Chudleigh had reopened after the road was closed for "several hours".

"No significant delays are reported in the area. Thank you for your patience," added National Highways.

Motorists were diverted on to the A380 and through Newton Abbot.

Devon County Council advised drivers to allow extra time to their journey or to use alternative routes where possible.

Highways said specialists were also called in for clean-up work.
