A war memorial has been damaged after a car is believed to have crashed into the commemorative archway.

Nottinghamshire Police suspect the driver hit the memorial and fled the scene between Sunday 2 June and Monday 3rd June.

The damage to the memorial at Southwell recreation ground was reported to police on Monday at 10:27 BST.

Southwell Town Council said it was "too early" to clarify the cost of repair, which will be done in "due course".

The authority added that there was no plan to use the monument in D-Day memorial celebrations on Thursday.

The monument commemorates the lives of 107 men from Southwell who were lost in World War One and World War Two.
