A crash involving two lorries led to a major route being closed ahead of Monday morning's rush hour.
Part of the A66 eastbound carriageway was closed following the collision, which happened just prior to the Bowes turnoff, near Barnard Castle.
Motorists were warned to avoid the area as congestion backed up towards the Cumbrian border.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said nobody had been injured in the accident, which was reported to police at about 05:20 BST.
Officers from the Cumbria and Durham forces worked with National Highways to divert traffic and recover the HGVs.
The road has since reopened.
