Police have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage after three people died in a crash in Rainham.

Officers were called to the A13 at Wennington Marshes, shortly after 22.00 BST on 15 July to reports of a crash involving a car and a stationary vehicle.

The stationary vehicle had been involved in a crash a short time earlier.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene and a fourth person was treated at hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

The Met Police said the fatal crash happened after officers were called to the first, non-fatal, crash but before any resources arrived at the scene.

It happened within the Met Police's area but was very close to the border with Essex Police.

This led to 999 calls after the first collision being answered by Essex Police's control room.

Both forces have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the response.

Det Insp Julie Trodden, from the Met's serious collision investigation unit, said: 鈥淭his is an extremely tragic incident and my thoughts remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones.

鈥淲e are keen to speak with anyone who may have been driving along this stretch of road around 22:00 on 15 July and who may have dashcam footage of the incident.鈥

Information can be passed to the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0208 597 4874 or the Met Police quoting 8672/15JUL.
