Driver 'went to bed' after fleeing crash scene

A man went home and got into bed after seriously injuring a pedestrian when he hit them with his car, police have said.

Ross Vazquez was driving a Nissan Pixo along Church Street in Leamington Spa when he collided with a man in his 20s on 29 October last year at about 01:20 GMT.

He initially stopped, Warwickshire Police said, but did not check on the victim and instead fled the scene.

The 18-year-old of Brunel Close, Leamington Spa, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless/inconsiderate driving.

The pedestrian suffered a fracture to his leg and an open elbow wound.

Vazquez appeared at Coventry Magistrates Court on 31 July, where he was given an 18 week jail term suspended for 12 months.

He was ordered to carry out 150 hours supervised unpaid work and given an 18 month driving ban.

He will also have to pay 拢85 costs and a 拢154 victim surcharge.

PC Sam Bates said: 鈥淩oss Vazquez acted in a totally irresponsible way. Upon leaving the scene he couldn鈥檛 have known how badly injured the pedestrian was.

"He failed to wait for emergency services to arrive and went home to bed instead.

鈥淥ur investigation later concluded that he was over the drink drive limit at the time of the collision and this was an aggravating factor to the offence."
