Production at a Leicestershire dairy which has operated for almost 250 years could cease, its owners have said.
Arla Foods, which runs Tuxford and Tebbutt Creamery in Melton Mowbray, confirmed on Friday it was proposing to stop production at the site.
The creamery has been producing Stilton cheese since 1780 and employs about 60 people.
Fran Ball, vice president for production at Arla Foods, said the workers affected by the proposals had been spoken to on Friday morning.
"We are now entering in to a period of consultation with those colleagues," Ms Ball added.
"Our priority right now is to support our colleagues impacted during this challenging period.鈥
Arla Foods said in January it was conducting a "strategic operational review" and was looking for potential buyers for the site in the meantime.
